The Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot, your best robotics competitor

Walk, get up, grab objects, play soccer... these actions are still real challenges for robots... and their programmers!

What ever your programming skills, if you wish to face these challenges and lots of others, if you are looking for a standard robotics base to confront other developers in competition, the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot is what you need.

The Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot is a mobile robot for competitions

Strong and light thanks to its aluminum structural frames, it includes AX-12A and AX-18A Dynamixel servomotors that are together powerful, precise and easy to command. Its gripper hands allow it to manipulate objects.

The Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot also includes several sensors, as a distance sensor to avoid walls and a gyroscopic sensor to maintain its balance. It is shipped with a infrared (wireless) RC-100A remote control to react to you orders.

Programming is done through the RoboPlus software, included with the robot. It allows to record movements and to automate actions in a simple and intuitive manner. The program is then transferred on the CM-530 controller and the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot can act autonomously ! And to begin easily, the robot contains some prerecorded soccer and fighting moves by default.

The components of the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot

The Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot contains all needed pieces, from the motors and frames to the screws and cable holder. An assembly manual helps you to get quickly a functional robot and guides you through your first steps.

The Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot has 8 AX-12A Dynamixel servomotors to move its arms. It has two degrees of freedom in each shoulder, one in the elbow and you can chose to use the lasts motors in the grippers or to allow a waist twist. The AX-12A servomotors are the ones used in the whole Bioloid range.

The legs of the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot are actuated by AX-18A Dynamixel servomotors, that are bit bit more powerful and mainly quicker. The robot has 5 degrees of freedom in each leg, so 10 AX-18A Dynamixel servomotors in all.

The CM-530 Bioloid controller has an ARM Cortex microcontroller and can be programmed using the RoboPlus software using a mini-USB cable (provided). It is powered by a LiPo battey (provided, with its charger ) or directly by a power plug using a SMPS cable (also provided).

The RC-100A wireless remote control has 10 buttons (plus one power button), to which you can associate actions of the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot. The remote control and the robot communicate with infrared by default, but the range and bandwidth can be improved by using a Zig110 or a BT110A set.

First steps with the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot

What to do once you have received your Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot? First, you have to build it, then charge its battery. Then, when you turn the robot on, it should reach the following position. If it doesn't, please check your assembly.

initial posture of the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot

A default program is already included in the CM-530 controller of the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot. The sources of the program can be found here

The program allows the robot to move according to the orders sent by the RC-100A wireless remote control (the 5 and 6 buttons are the upper buttons):

The RC-100A wireless remote control can command the Bioloid GP programmable humanoid robot

U Forward D Backward
L Turn left R Turn right
U + L Forward and turn left U + R Forward and turn right
L + 5 Left sidestep L + 5 + 6 Fast left sidestep
L + U + 5 Forward left diagonal step L + D + 5 Backward left diagonal step
R + 5 Right sidestep R + 5 + 6 Fast right sidestep
R + U + 5 Forward right diagonal step R + D + 5 Backward right diagonal step
1 + U Get up if you fall backward 1 + D Get up if you fall forward

This program also has three different modes that allow different actions:

5 + 6 + D + 3 Go to soccer mode
